Diversity Day

Mr. Earl Redrick addresses the Student Body.
Originally scheduled for Martin Luther King Day but postponed due to weather, this year’s Diversity Day coincided with Ash Wednesday.  Bro. August Schaefer OSB pointed out the appropriateness of this alliance in that just as Lent is a time for looking back and reflecting on how we can grow and improve, this also is the point of Diversity Day.

Earl Redrick served as keynote speaker. Mr. Redrick is the Director of the Omaha Field Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an adjunct instructor and social equity & anti-bias facilitator. Mr. Redrick has a Master of Business Administration and is a 21-year retired veteran who served in numerous tours and deployments. His 50-minute address, "Inclusive Leadership for the Next Generation of Leaders,” focused on diversity, inclusion, and the many obstacles throughout history that hindered the ability of many Americans to reach acceptance and success.

After Mr. Redrick’s presentation, students and staff broke up into groups for various activities and discussions related to diversity, including a video about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

The day concluded with Mass for Ash Wednesday.     Diversity Day Photos & Mass Photos

Homecoming: Fall Clean Up

Wednesday of Homecoming Week was "Favorite Jersey Day". The seniors were off campus for their yearly retreat.   It was also PSAT day. After a full morning of testing the freshmen, sophomores and juniors broke into groups led by faculty to do some fall cleanup around the campus.  It was a great day for getting outside after being cooped up in a classroom all morning for a standardized test.  The projects consisted of such things as cleaning out the attic, sorting out storage, putting away window air conditioners, discarding branches, planting new trees, collecting windfall apples to feed to the horses and dismantling no longer needed barbwire fencing.   More Photos - More Photos by Dr. Peters

Freshman Tournament has Knights in Checkmate

Thomas D’Aquila | Staff Writer for "The Mount"
The freshman dorm is filled with intense feelings. Anticipation and rivalry charge the air as students gather together. The reason?  A chess tournament involving the freshmen class. The room grows quiet to only a dull murmur as the students make their move. It moves slowly, as the freshmen make decisions “Chess is a game that is not for the impatience,” said Jimmy Severa, a freshman.

“It’s intense,” said Armel Migondje, a freshman, said of the tournament’s atmosphere. “After the game, the loser is sad, but it’s still cheerful, playful and good sportsmanship.”

For Tim Struckman, freshman dean, the idea to have unplugged activities is supposed to be a build community. “At the beginning of every freshman year, I try to limit the electronics,” Struckman said. “I want the boys to interact and get to know each other and board games are a good way to pass the time.”

Thirty freshmen, both day students and boarders, are competing along with Struckman and Jack Pritchard, the assistant freshman dean. The first prize: bragging rights and the privilege of going to lunch first for the rest of the semester. “

The tournament works as a two bracket system. Students play after school, before study hall or after study hall. Trying to fit day students into the picture provides a challenge. But that’s not the only reason not all of the first matches are made. “Many people are stalling on their matches,” Struckman said.

The tournament started in an organic way. The boys wanted to see “which out of them is the best” as Struckman put it. This is the second year for the chess competition, and it is also Struckman’s  second year as freshman dean.

“I’m proud of the participation,” Struckman said. Many freshmen who have never played chess have been enthusiastic, but the better players also have been conducting good sportsmanship, according to Struckman. “More experienced players have been coaching the less skilled players,” said Struckman. “I was impressed with the ‘no-fear attitude of some students who have never played.”

For students that are helping others, there is a certain sense of accomplishment. “I feel like I am helping someone,” Freshman Matthew Thiel said.

“[During the matches]I can start conversations with people and we can be interested in chess,” said Severa of the casual nature of the tournament. “You can’t talk at [state] competitions, you’ll get kicked out.” Severa has gone to chess competitions with in a club at his grade school, of which he has been a part of since the third grade. Although he has not been going with the same frequency due to school, the opportunity of playing now is a treat. “We have fun competing against each other,” said Severa.

Adjusting to high school is a difficult enough task for any freshman. Living at school presents itself with its own set of challenges. Luckily, students have their own way of bonding together which can soften the blow of homesickness.

Grandparents Night 2014

Every year students look forward to spending an evening with their grandparents at the Mount. For many it is the first opportunity for the grandparents to see where their grandsons go to school.  The evening began with a formal assembly for which Fr. Richard was the MC.  Talks were also given by Student Council President Harrison Hohman, Head of School Dr. David Peters, Head of Development Kim Volpone and Booster Club President Mr. Bill Miklas.

After the assembly students showed their grandparents around the school and then gathered in the Armory for cookies and drinks.   The evening ended in with the singing of Night Prayer.

Mission Trip 2014

The following Spring Break Mission Trip to Mexico will be updated as available  PHOTOS

Day 1
Greetings!  All the Mt Michael students with their dads arrived in time to Mexico.  We made it out of Mexico City in record time.  Arrived to the village where Br Dustin had a big taco dinner ready for us.  After a nice meal around the campfire we said our night prayers and then rolled out the sleeping bags.
Tomorrow mass at 10 am for the villagers and we begin work on two houses.

-------------------------------------------------
 Day 2
Today we had our first day of work. We started out with mass with the villagers at 10, Fr. Dan and Fr. Eamon celebrated. The day was pretty warm, but soon turned to rain. We still started to work on the houses because we don't have any time to spare!

We have three groups working, two on the house and one on furniture. The first house has all the walls up and the windows and doors are framed. Tomorrow we will start the roof and mixing the cement.

The missionaries started a big village wide soccer game with all the children; the people have been good to us, we are eating like kings: tacos all you can eat!

--------------------------------
Update 3
Sorry for not being able to get emails out each day. Lots of great work being done. Will be painting both houses on outside tomorrow and  stucco on the inside. We are even a little ahead of schedule. Even enough energy to play soccer and fly some kites this evening. What s great bunch of young men and of course older guys. Hope to get to town again tomorrow.

---------------------------
Update 4
News from Mexico, projects are done, last night was house blessing, dinner with the villagers and fireworks. They are off to Mexico City today today and a hotel bed and shower! Will see everyone tomorrow!
