Illuminated Knights
The Mount Michael student body and Monastic community were
recently invited by Alumnus Mike McCarthy ’69 to the Josyln
Museum to view the exhibit “Illuminating the Word” which
features “The St. John’s Bible”
The
St. John’s Bible is the first hand written and illuminated
bible to be created in more than 500 years. The project
was commissioned by St. John’s Benedictine Abbey in Minnesota
to commemorate the new Millennium. Over 4 million dollars
were raised by St. John’s Abbey to bring this project to
fruition.
World
renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson assembled a team of
writers and illuminators to complete this seven year project
under his direction. At this time two of seven volumes
have been completed.
The
Students, Staff and Monastic Community began the evening
with a pasta feast served in the Josyln’s atrium after
which many parents and families joined us in the auditorium
for a viewing of a video about the making of The Saint
John’s Bible.
After
the video introduction everyone moved to the gallery to
view the incredible illuminations of the bible. Some were
from the completed volumes while others were from volumes
that are still in progress.
A
special thanks to Mike McCarthy and his wife for hosting
this wonderful event.
