Also quite notable is that Mount Michael freshmen Luke Gutschewski won the individual championship in a sudden death playoff!   Seniors John Hudson placed 4th and Matthew Winters place 9th.

Omaha World Herald All-Academic List

Each year the Omaha World-Herald asks Nebraska school counselors to contact students who have an SAT score of 1390 or higher or an ACT score of 32 or higher. These students must fill out an extensive application that includes all their classes, grades, and service.  These students represent the top 4% of Nebraska’s seniors academically.  This year Mount Michael had 19 students qualify for the distinction, which is 34% of the graduating class.
In addition Nolan Huetter and Nicholas Orr were named to the Omaha World-Herald All-Metro Area Academic 2nd Team!

Graduation


The Mount Michael Benedictine School Class of 2018 has 57 graduates.  The average ACT score for this class is 28.6, which surpassed last year’s record score of 28.5.

The 57 boys of the Class of 2018 were accepted at 87 colleges in 30 states. This was nine different colleges in Nebraska and seven different colleges in NY.
They will be attending 30 different colleges in 16 states; with 44% going out-of-state and 37% to private colleges. Twenty-nine boys will be attending five different colleges in Nebraska.

The Class of 2018 was offered $ 7,723,944 of scholarship dollars.  One-third of this class qualified for full tuition scholarships. Two-thirds of these boys will be using scholarship money for the institution they will be attending which is more than $2 million.

Ten Students Become Oblates of Saint Benedict


At Vespers this past Sunday, ten students professed their oblation before a gathering of family members, monks, and fellow Oblates both student and adult.

They read their Oblation before the Abbot and then sign their document and placed it upon the altar.  Afterwards a reception was held in the Monastery.

Awards Night

The Mount Michael Community recently gathered to celebrate the many accomplishments of our students over this past school year.

Evening Highlights:

The evening started with a special presentation of a full ride ROTC scholarship to Creighton University. The award was presented to Keyton Pappas by a colonel representing the Air Force ROTC. Keyton will use the scholarship while he pursues a pre-dentistry program.  Keyton is the son of James and Lisa Pappas of Omaha. Keyton attened St. Wenceslaus School before coming to Mount Michael.

Lorcan Jamal

The official awards program began with the athletic awards presented by Activities Director Mr. Derrik Spooner. This year's Athlete of the Year was Lorcan Jamal. Lorcan was also recognized as a 12 season athlete. Lorcan played sports every season during his years at the Mount. He played tennis, basketball, and golf.  Lorcan is the son of Malia Jamal of Omaha and Michael Jamal of Simi Valley, California. Lorcan attended St. Vincent de Paul School before coming to Mount Michael.

Ms Gina Fosco presented the Key Staffer Award to Joey Recker.  This award is sponsored by the Omaha World Herald newspaper in recognition of each metro areas schools' outstanding journalism student. Joey was the Editor-in Chief for "The Mount".

Mr. Paul Hotovy acknowledged two sophomores as recipients of two special awards.

Ben deMayo is year's Mount Michael recipient of the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Award. Ben is the son of Miles and Lynn deMayo of Omaha.  Ben attended Christ the King School before attending Mount Michael.

Evan Schroeder was Mount Michael's recipient  the Omaha Exchange Club's Sophomore of the Year Award. Evan is the son of Andrew and Maree Schroeder of Omaha. Evan attended St. Vincent de Paul School before entering Mount Michael.

Ms. Noelle Hinrickson announced that junior Levi Kicken was selected as Mount Michael's Boy's State representative.  Boy's State is Sponsored by the American Legion. It is open to current junior students who are in scholastically good standing, model good citizenship and leadership qualities, are in good health, and are willing to spend eight continuous days at the program during the first week of June.  Levi is the son of Louis and Amy Kicken of Gering, Nebraska. Levi attend Gering Junior High School before coming to Mount Michael.

The President’s Award for Educational Excellence is an honorary award presented to seniors who meet the following criteria:  they must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and tests at the 85th percentile or above on either the ACT (which is a 28) or the SAT (which is a 1310).  These students must demonstrate high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities, judgement, involvement in community service, extra-curricular activities.  Mount Michael has 24 students from the class of 2018 who are being recognized for their President’s Award for

The evening concluded with Dr. David Peters, Head of School, presenting the coveted Mount Michael Award which is given to the senior who best epitomizes the values and character of a Mount Michael Knight. This year's recipient of the Mount Michael Award is Armel Mignondje. He is the son of Afi Adokpe of LaVista. Armel attend St. Columbkille School before attending Mount Michael.

Knights Win and Place in Essay Contest

Two Mount Michael students were winners in the Archdiocese of Omaha's Center for Family Life Formation Pro-Life Essay Contest.

Sophomore Kolton Koubsky won first place for his grade. He is the son of Ken and Kristen Koubsky of Omaha. Kolton is a member of Mary our Queen parish.

Junior Shintaro Fujita placed third for his grade.  He is the son of Taisuke and Rie Fujita of Tokyo, Japan.

The contest was open to 7th-11th grades students. Cash prizes were awarded for each grade level. 1st place winners entries are also submitted to the Knights of Columbus fall 2017 statewide contest.

Sister Carol Jean Vandenhemel OSB and Mrs. Amy Masek are Mount Michael's Theology teachers. Congratulations to them and all their students who took part in the contest!

Gloeb Honored at Rotary Club

Metro area seniors were recently honored at luncheon hosted by the Omaha Rotary Club as the 2018 Outstanding High School Senior from their schools. 

Mount Michael Benedictine’s Honoree was Garrett Gloeb. 

Garrett has received major scholarship offers from Creighton University, Saint Louis University, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Regents Scholar). Garrett was recognized as a National Merit Finalist, and prior to this was recognized in 2017 with the National Spanish Examinations junior travel award, distinguishing him as one of the top 24 Spanish language students in the United States, and first ever in Nebraska. Garrett received first honors all quarters at Mount Michael and was an inductee into the National Honor Society in 2016. He is a three-year varsity football letter winner, a two-year varsity baseball letter winner, and was a starting member of the 2016 Junior Legion district championship team. In 2018. Garrett tutors’ younger students in math and athletics and has volunteered his free time conversing and strolling with the elderly at a metro-area retirement home. Over his life he has challenged himself to learn and to compete academically and to compete academically and athletically at a high level. Garrett's strong religious beliefs have taught him that God's essence is present in all, and that individuals are called to support one another in whatever fashion affordable by circumstance or experience. Garrett intends to study biochemistry on a pre-medicine track. He plans to attend Notre Dame, Dartmouth. or Creighton. Garrett's parents are Matthew and Kristi Gloeb of Bennington, Nebraska.

Garrett is the son of Matt ’82 and Kristin Gloeb and attended Saint Vincent de Paul School before coming to Mount Michael.
